Description : Getting a Summer Job is a ritual for all College students and most High School students but with this extremely bad recession even Middle School and Elementary School students are getting in on the act.

It is necessary so you can earn extra money as well as gain valuable job experience that can be used later in life. The problem with 2009 summer jobs is that there does not seem to be as many because of the recession. You should not let this frustrate you because there are jobs available, you just have to know how to get them. Knowing this will put you ahead of everyone else who will wait until the very last minute to find one. But don't think because it's July that you can't get one. Many students will leave their summer jobs for many reasons and this leaves you with a great new summer job opening!

Well I was sitting in our kitchen looking so sad when he walked in and he asked me what was the the matter with me? So I told him I needed a summer job, and he said he was looking for a girl to work in the snack bar in the Miniature Golf Course he owned in the next town. How to Choose Your Major in Three Regret-Free Steps

I got wonderful feedback from my post regarding how to choose your college, so I thought it might be a good idea to expand to even more college related topics.

One topic that is of great concern to many freshmen is choice of major. Choosing your major course of study is extremely crucial. Your choice has implications that carry into your whole life. This is sometimes difficult for high school students to grasp.

Choosing the wrong major can severely impact your life.

*The wrong major can severely limit your choice of career. For example, if you choose to major in English, then later decide you want a career in finance, your major will not be much help to you. *The wrong major can restrict your choices in coursework during your college career.

The wrong major can also be very, very boring. If you don't like your major, you are unlikely to enjoy your classes. You may also dislike your professors and have little or nothing in common with your classmates. So clearly, choosing the wrong major can ruin your college career. It also won't do much for your professional career. If you choose the wrong major, you will be sure to regret it.

In this article, I have listed some things you should keep in mind as you select your major.

It's important to discuss these things with your parents too. Most of what they say has a lot of value, even if you don't realize that yet

1. Think about what kind of JOB you want to have

If you are fascinated with business, be sure to choose a social sciences major like economics. If you are interested in engineering, look into things like computer sciences.

It should go without saying that you should choose your major form the courses of study within the discipline that interests you.

Liberal arts is the group you will want to choose from if you are interested in journalism and writing.

You may be wondering why I am pointing out the apparently obvious, but you would be surprised to know how many students choose their major without thinking of these things. Just keep in mind that you choice of major determines the course of your life. It will not just affect your college experience, it will affect your life experience, too.

What job would make you happy? What career would fulfill you? What do you love to do now, that can be translated into a paying job?

2. Think about what type of personality you have

If you are an outgoing, happy-go-lucky sort, you are unlikely to be happy choosing computer science as a major.

If you are creative and artistic, you may be up for the challenge of creating your own major or pursuing an interdisciplinary major.

Included in your personality is your work style. An analytical, numbers oriented person should choose an according major. One who enjoys creative writing will be happiest with a major in one of the humanities.

Your major should support your strong points. Don't save your talents for your hobby and struggle at your job! If you major in something you dislike, you are sure to be unhappy.

When you clearly map your goals, you will have an easier time moving through your college career. Goal-setting is a very intelligent practice.

How to Get an "A" on Your Next Essay Test

All high school and college students know that getting good marks on essay tests is one of their biggest tasks in any academic year. If you can learn how to consistently write good essays then you will have gained an academic tool that will be of immense value to you in the coming years. In case you need some tips on how to be a better essay writer, then I would like to share my experience with you.

1. Begin each exam with a close look at the test and make a plan. Instead of writing at once, it is very important to read all of the questions and make a careful note of how many questions there are and whether there are any choices that you can make. Without a careful look at the test and without an idea of what you have to do there is a chance that you could even leave out a question or two. I know because it happened to me once!

2. Budget your time and make an outline of your essay. Once you know how many questions there are and which ones you have to answer, then it is crucial that you allocate your available time for each part of the test. Carry a watch with you because you may not get a seat with a good view of the clock. Besides time budgeting it is also a good practice to plan what you are going to write by creating an outline of the points that you are going to cover. When your outline is ready, then start writing and stay within the allotted time for each question.

3. Start off with a good introductory paragraph. Your first few sentences can influence the whole essay, either positively or negatively. So start it right by restating the question and then give a sketch of how you are going to tackle the question. This introductory paragraph will prepare the teacher for what is coming next and it will also help guide you through the next part of the essay.

4. Show that you know something about the course. The paragraphs that follow the introduction and precede the conclusion are the places where you can show that you have read the books, listened to class discussion and have understood something about the course. Use these paragraphs to answer the question, and wherever possible back up your opinions with references to authors, articles, books and class discussion that supports your arguments. Emphasize what you know about the subject and don't try to hide your knowledge gaps with "hot air." Make every word count.

5. Write in a Concise and Clear Style. Knowing the material is not enough, in order to do well on an essay exam you have to express yourself clearly. Use a simple sentence structure, rather than rambling, run-on sentences. Stick to terms that you are familiar with and can use properly rather than trying to use vocabulary that is unfamiliar. Do your best to make your essay readable and remember that the person grading the exam has to go through many essays besides yours.

6. Conclude clearly and strongly. Your closing paragraph should restate what you set out to do in the opening paragraph and it should summarize what you have said in the body of your essay. Conclude your essay with clarity and with confidence.

Essay writing is something that you will have to work on throughout your academic life. However, if you follow these tips you may end up with an essay writing skill that will not only help you during your school years, but will remain with you as a valuable asset during your entire life.

The student loan lenders may present you with the "forbearance" option if you request a deferment. The "forbearance" means that the lenders will reduce your student loan repayments temporarily until you are back on top of your debt problem.

Decorating a College Dorm Room Cheap

Description : Everyone knows that going to college is an expensive proposition. You'll have tuition to pay for, books to buy, meal plans to choose from and transportation costs to consider. Decorating your dorm, however doesn't have to overextend an already tight budget. You can add your own unique style to any space, even if all you have to work with is four plain walls, a floor and a ceiling. The first place to start is with your roommate. Check to see what (s)he is planning to bring so that you don't waste any money on the same thing. Then, be sure that you understand what you really need to come up with versus want you want. Next, it's time to get creative:

1. Who gets your business? One of the biggest gems when it comes to dorm-room shopping is the Salvation Army or thrift shop that's close to campus. The students who moved out of dorm rooms last spring likely stopped their first to unload the items that they would no longer be needing. Other than the thrift store, don't waste your time and gasoline driving from store to store looking for bargain, just browse online.

2. Cover up boring walls. Painting dorms isn't usually an option, but there are several other ways to bring some color and visual interest to dorm walls. Fabric, tacked into the ceiling against a wall, adds texture, warmth and any color that you and your roommate can agree on. Or, how about starting a collage? All you need is a big piece of foam board hung on the wall and the rest will evolve throughout the year as you college concert tickets, pictures and posters. What's more, if you come across a friend who is an art student, it can't hurt to ask them to contribute to the project.

3. Don't buy carpet when you can save with throw rugs instead. Think about it -- you pay for carpet by the square foot, so why cover areas under furniture such as beds, desk and dressers? Instead, buy a few strategically placed throw rugs to soften and warm the floors for months of spreading out on the floor to study.

4. Keep looking for treasures. In order to separate your room from everyone else's that you know, there are ways to combine form with function that can be uniquely your own. For example take the basic student crate that most use for storage, and weave plush fabric throughout the openings for a splash of color and texture. Dated desk and floor lamps can be made to look modern with a simple lampshade update. A plain waste basket can be painted with sponges to incorporate a design that appeals to you.

Creativity is the thrifty student's best friend when it comes to putting together your first home away from home. You have a big year ahead of you, so do your best to create a nurturing living environment as you go along.

College Life: Good Rules Make Good Roommates

Description : You're off to college and you're thrilled, right? What about that heavy stone sitting in your belly about rooming with a stranger? You managed to share a room with a sibling for many years, so you can do this, right? You can with some planning and negotiation, read on for tips:

1. Food: whether in the cupboards or refrigerator - will your food share space or will it have its own? If your food isn't going to co-mingle, you're golden. If, however, your food needs to cohabitate, divide the space, and make certain you only eat what's yours - no matter how tempting that leftover Chinese food looks.

2. Who's going to clean the kitchen? Rule of thumb: you dirty it, you wash it. If necessary try to set up a timeframe of when dishes will be cleared up. You may think they need to be washed and put away within five minutes of using them, your roommate might think washing and clearing can be done within 72 hours. Compromise may be in order.

3. Overnight guests or visitors who stay until the sun comes up? Set ground rules on how long visitors are welcomed and how many visitors you want crowding the room at once. If you have a big exam and need some extra zzzz's, ask the roommate for extra consideration for an early lights out. Rules for overnight guests should be hashed out from the get-go.

4. Nothing says a good night's sleep like dead silence, right? Maybe not. If you need noise and your roommate needs silence, you may need to sleep with earphones in. Can you only fall asleep with the white noise of the television? Discuss it up front to avoid problems later.

5. Hey, that's mine! Yes, you may have a roommate who thinks nothing of borrowing your last sheet of paper, or who rummages through your drawers when they can't find a pair of clean socks. Or maybe you're the offender of that rule. Operate under the assumption that what's mine is mine, unless told otherwise. Ownership and boundary issues should be discussed up front.

Your roommate may start off as a stranger, but living in close quarters could result in a life-long friendship with careful planning and compromise.

The Similarities And Differences In Graduate and Undergraduate Financial Aid

In less than forty years the cost of a college education has risen dramatically and today a college education will cost about ten times as much as it did when I myself attended college. Fortunately however there are now a variety of programs available to help you to fund your education and the path that you follow will depend upon whether you are an undergraduate or a graduate student.

As an undergraduate you will rely on an often complicated mixture of scholarships, grants and loans and, in the case of loans, these will either be taken out alone, by your parents, or as a combination loan in which for example you take out the loan in your own name with your parents as co-borrowers or co-signers to the loan.

By far the most popular student loan program today, which accounts for more than ninety percent of government backed funding, is subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans. The most desirable are of course subsidized loans on which the government picks up the bill for interest payments while you are in college and for a grace period of up to six months after you graduate. These loans are however needs based and so there are a couple of hoops which you have to jump through to qualify. Unsubsidized loans in contrast are not needs based and so are available to almost all students.

For a graduate student however the picture is somewhat different and, while there are graduate scholarships and grants available, these tend to be few and far apart. It is however often possible to get a teaching or research assistantship, which is essentially a low paying, long hours job which many graduates avail themselves of to help them through their course or while carrying out research.

Another recently introduced option for graduates is a PLUS loan. PLUS stands for Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students and, as the name suggests, was originally designed to allow parents to take out a preferential loan in order to help a son or daughter through college. Now however this program has been extended to also allow graduate students to take a PLUS loan in their own right.

PLUS loans are readily available and are credit, rather than need, based. For some graduates this may cause a problem but the majority of graduates have not had time to get themselves into the credit problems which are suffered by so many adults today. Consequently, although you may have a sparse credit history, you probably will not have enough bad marks on your credit report to rule you ineligible for a PLUS loan.

The downside of PLUS loans is that, in historical terms at least, current interest rates which are generally either 7.9% or 8.5% are not low. This means that interest charges on even a relatively small loan can be high and repayment will need to start within 60 days of the grant of the loan, with no grace period.

As with all student loans, whether for undergraduates or graduates, there are a variety of different loans available from both government and private sources and, government loans in particular, have different caps for both single loans and lifetime loans from individual programs. As a result this is one area which you will need to research carefully, rather than simply rushing in and applying for the first loan which springs to mind.

Arming Students with Defense Weapons

April 16, 2007 changed the face of the security of our college campuses forever. The terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech

redefined our views of student safety while they are on campus. It has also raised some questions. Could this have been

prevented? Could crimes against students on campus be prevented? What steps can the administration of the universities take

to ensure the safety of their students? Should students be allowed to be proactive and carry pepper spray, stun guns, air

Tasers or Taser guns while on campus? What ramifications could a measure such as this have in the level of violence already

occurring on campus?

While security may not necessarily need to be increased, it definitely does need some modification. Security personnel should

be trained in many different emergency situations. Preparation is the key and if security personnel know how to react to

emergency situations, they are trained to handle an armed intruder on campus, then perhaps some campus violence can be

averted. Students could also be trained to handle some situations. Classes in self defense and crime prevention for students

and professors could also help.

Another measure that should be considered is allowing students to defend themselves with certain types of weapons or devices.

This is not to say that firearms should be allowed on campus, although in some states, such as Louisiana, the only place that

firearms are not allowed is in the dorms. But allowing students to carry pepper spray or stun guns could help in preventing

some of the violent crime that occurs on our college campuses.

At this time, much of campus security is up to the university. The university determines what security measures are allowed

on campus and which are banned. Perhaps placing Taser guns or pepper spray in the hands of students would help. Although

violent crime is minimal on college campuses, according to federal government statistics, there are some burglary, rape, and

assault occurrences on campuses. Allowing students to have some means of protection other than an aluminum bat or club,

pepper spray, or stun guns could be a way for students to stave off violent situations, and it could deter violent crime

making it nearly non existent.

If the security measures are not taken and students take it upon themselves to be armed (other than firearms) and they use

these devices, such as pepper spray, stun gun or air Tasers to defend themselves against an attack on campus, what

consequences, if any, should they face? In the face of many college campuses' stance on zero tolerance, a violation of any

rules that would be in place regarding having such devices on campus could result in expulsion or suspension, regardless of

whether or not the device saved the student's life or averted an attack.

In many states it is illegal to carry firearms on campus and even in those states where the state law to bear arms may

supersede any ban on firearms on campus, the on campus security should still be enhanced. Installing metal detectors could be

an answer on smaller campuses, but on larger campuses with numerous buildings could be costly in both equipment and operation

as well as manpower to operate the detectors. It is simply not cost efficient and is very likely to incur an increase in

tuition in an effort to absorb the costs. Perhaps allowing students to carry pepper spray, stun guns, and Taser guns could be

an answer in at least cutting down campus crime.

At What Price Does College Become Too Expensive?

Finding a job now is hard enough and when you add in the debt load many of these graduates are carrying, it makes one wonder whether college was really worth it?

Many recent college graduates are finding that, in this horrible economy, a college degree does not guarantee any kind of job. Additionally, many college graduates end up getting jobs in fields that are unrelated to what they studied in college or jobs that dont require a degree at all. This means many students may be wasting their degree and the money they spent to get it.

In the final analysis, college is not that beneficial to many students who dont have very specific career goals. If the choice is graduating college with a $40,000 to $50,000 debt load as opposed to getting a job right out of high school and being able to save right away, the choice becomes unclear. It is true that a college degree can benefit you later in life and generally help prepare you for life, but there has to be a point where that price tag is just too high and we may already be at that point.

Under such senses, people take the education as a training undertaken for few years in any symbolic educational institution. However, the very education system must move on every moment in the life of a person for the consistent betterment of life. One should never forget the fact that the growth of society solely depends on the type of adopted educational system. So, the famous entrepreneur and philanthropist George Peabody prominently quoted that education is a debt due from present to future generations. Neither country nor society can survive without education. After electing as the first president of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela also recognized its importance and during the briefing upon his prime targets; he exclusively mentioned the relevance of education in the society and his word was, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Still want to improve education? Okay, let’s get started:

Reform One: the single most important change we need is that teachers must major/minor in the subjects they will teach. They absolutely must not major in Education. They must, throughout their teaching careers, be Experts in the subjects they are teaching. Only in America can someone major in Education and end up teaching Chemistry. It’s so ridiculous you can deduce immediately that the people who made this possible were not serious about education.

Reform Two: the second most important reform we need is that states which now require teachers to join the NEA (a highly politicized union) must change that law. If teachers want to join a union, that’s their business. Coercing them to join sounds a lot like an un-American abuse of power. Let’s take the politics out of education, especially the far-left ideology that has always been more concerned with social engineering than with genuine education.

Reform Three: fix reading instruction. Reading is the single most essential skill; education can’t really begin until reading is learned. Phonics proponents have always said they would teach virtually all children to read by the end of first grade. On the other hand, proponents of Whole Word, Sight Words, Dolch Words, and all non-phonetic approaches have never claimed that they would teach children to read more than a few hundred words per year. This is what lawyers call prima facie malfeasance. The victims of this wrong-headed approach turn out, in large percent, to be functionally illiterate, dyslexic, or able to read only with great difficulty.

Reform Four: the next most important skill is arithmetic, which should be taught in a smooth progression from the simplest bits to the more advanced aspects. Reform Math programs (a/k/a New New Math) should be eliminated from the schools because they muddle the basics, mix in advanced concepts with simple concepts, and prevent children from mastering even the simplest arithmetic. (It’s helpful here to note that private schools and the homeschooling community tend to reject New New Math.)

Reform Five: kids should learn facts. The Education Establishment has for many decades waged war against memorization. “They can look it up” is the cry of this anti-intellectual cartel. No. “They” won’t need to look it up because “they” will know it. Starting in the first grade, children should learn the simplest facts (the names of the oceans and continents, for example). They learn foundational information; they build on this; and then they build another layer on the first layer. As the years go by, they become what used to be called educated. And they like it that way -- because facts are fun, and knowledge is power.

Reform Six: root out all the phony methods introduced by the Education Establishment during the 20th century. Vast energy was spent devising and promoting sophistries whose actual impact was negative. There are DOZENS of these clunkers, each one more destructive than the next. Self Esteem said you had to praise children even when they had the wrong answer. Constructivism said children had to create their own knowledge, an absurd project requiring many extra years. Multiculturalism said that knowledge about faraway places was just as important as knowledge about a young student’s own city or country...The point is that all these sophistries are destructive. They are a kind of mental crabgrass growing everywhere in the public schools. So the first order of business is to clear away the weeds.

All right, suppose we have achieved these six reforms. What would the resulting schools look like? Like almost all the best schools have looked for many thousands of years. But less severe perhaps, more ingenious in the use of teaching aids (thanks to the digital age, we have so many more of them now).

Point is, the old-fashioned schools worked very well. Ordinary kids learned the basic information they needed to be citizens, to read the daily paper, and to advance further academically if they chose. So much of the claptrap introduced in the public schools the past century never had anything to do with education, only with social engineering. All these ill-advised additions have warped our judgment of what a school should look like and, indeed, all that a school can hope to accomplish. What we need to do is to recover the best of the past, blended with the best of the new possibilities.

Of School Grades & Admission Essays


The value of a College Admission Essay or graduate school admission essay, as part of the college or graduate admissions process can never be over-emphasized. To validate the value of an admission essay or graduate school admission essay, let us look at the following illustration:

James and John are two good friends who share one common dream: to become doctors. James wants to specialize in pediatrics while John is bent on concentrating in orthopedic surgery. After finishing their respective pre-med undergraduate studies and armed with almost identical grade point averages, and also identical scores in the standardized admissions tests (SAT and MCAT) the two buddies decide to apply to the same Medical schools. In his Admission Essay, James decided to list and discuss his school experiences, including his extracurricular works and achievements. He has quite a lot since he has a number of relatives as well as close friends who are either working or used to work in various hospitals and clinics. Gaining the needed medical exposure proved quite easy for him. He wrote them all down, since he figured that the more experiences and accomplishments he could present, the better will be his chances of getting admitted.

John, on the other hand, took a slightly different approach. He realized that he will be stepping into a higher level of learning, where school grades may not be the only determining factor for admission. He believed that detailed and personal experiences will also count a lot. So in his Admission Essay, John listed and discussed two memorable accounts or experiences. He particularly mentioned his volunteer work in a housing facility for the aged in the outskirts of the city where he was exposed to the usual problems of many senior citizens in the physical as well as in the emotional realm of life.

John also cited in his Admission Essay his involvement in a suburban clinic near the university where he was then studying wherein he processed and prepared the medical documents of the clinic's senior patients.
In both accounts, as listed down in his Admission Essay, John provided a comprehensive detail of the nature of his work, the particulars of the clinic he worked for, and the insights he was able to collate in the course of his work. He realized that compared to his good friend James, he had limited resources, both in finances and in contacts. So what he did is to present a lengthy and specific discussion of his personal background and the limited experiences that he was able to acquire given the restrictions that he faced then. John presented all these in painstaking detail, adding in a few of his own personal observations as well as the lessons that the experiences taught him.

When the results of the admissions exams was released including the Admission Essay, James and John discovered they had to go their separate ways. John was admitted to the medical school of his choice while James settled for his second choice.

What did the preceding illustration seek to imply? That high grades alone is not a guaranteed passport to admission in a college or university. This is especially true in this modern times wherein people in the academe are not impressed anymore with excellent grades and a high test score. They want more from a prospective candidate. Specifically, they want a background profile of the candidate, a look into his real self, his life and his goals, his experiences and the lessons that these gave him. The kind of information that can never be revealed by a high MCAT or GPA but can possibly be reflected in a Admission Essay.

But such information can only be provided by the applicant himself. This is where the Admission Essay will play a key role. This is where the candidate is requested to supply the data mentioned above and to supply them in clear and specific, and if possible, crisp and fresh, fashion. Often, it is in this part of the admissions process, i.e., the Admission Essay, that could mean the difference between acceptance or rejection. Many applicants are like James. They possess a nonchalant attitude towards admission essays, thinking that it is not an integral part of the application process, or they feel over confident because they have the right grades and test scores. But the truth is, school officials take admissions essays quite seriously. And coming up with a detailed and clearly-defined admission essay is as valuable as performing well in the admissions test itself. An applicant should not separate one from the other. If he is wishing to gain access to the college or university of his choice then he should be aware of the fact that admission essays constitute a vital portion of the application process. As such, it should be taken seriously and given sufficient preparation in the same manner that one thoroughly prepares for the MCAT itself.

Why Distance Learning?


Distance learning is a trend now. It is appropriate and relatively low cost, effective, and enjoyable way for any professional who wants to obtain new skills and techniques. All professional areas now need that their internal managers and specialists, and their external consultants and advisors, are well experienced and meet qualifications. This is the world of continuous professional development.

If you are a director, expert, specialist, working for a public or private organisation, small or large, this is crucial foryou. The same is if you are an entrepreneur, independent freelance, you are expected to be able to show that you are in line with date, that you are always developing your knowledge and your skills. Distance learning is a apt choice for professional development.The development of distance learning has been exponential. The Unesco report, from 2002, demonstrated the key role that distance learning is running, and not only in the developing countries, but in the highly developed countries too. It describes distance learning as a power contributing to social and economic development, open and distance learning is fast becoming an accepted and united part of the great educational systems . In the USA, distance and open learning is now in good position not only for working persons but also for school students also. In 2003 it was calculated that more than 30% of schools are giving courses over the internet and through video conference. US Education Department statistics estimate a doubling of this within 5 years, to over 60% of US schools giving courses by distance learning. In Africa, across the continent, distance learning is quickly overtaking classroom learning with predictions that by the year 2010 there will be over 10 million professionals who study by distance learning . In addition to the facts demonstrated by the exponential, massive growth that is happening and is forecast to continue, employers all over the world are receeiving distance learning qualifications as equally valid with classroom ones. In most of the professions, such as engineering and teaching, distance learning is already well established. In areas such as supply chain management and marketing, distance learning is growing exponentially as a highly credible alternative to classroom study. In evidence, for professionals in those areas study by distance learning now prominent and is the preferred alternative.

Global corporations such as Coca Cola, Honda Motors, and many more, readily recruit those with distance learning qualifications. Many leading universities, on all continents, are now giving courses delivery by classroom and by distance learning. They are all accepting distance learning qualifications as valid requirements for students to move on to higher levels of study (which can often be by distance learning!). Distance learning is totally credivle. For working specialists, a well selected distance learning course is appropriate and totally valid.

Excuses

I’ve been teaching college for ten years, and during that time I’ve heard my share of excuses from students. Sometimes they skip class, or fail exams, or get arrested during their oral presentations, but they always seem to have excuses for why their grades should not suffer as a result of missed work. Over the years, some good excuses have come my way, while others…well, let’s just say they have been less than convincing.

With millions of young people trying to succeed in school, it seemed that my expertise in the field of excuses could be used to help you, today’s student, to succeed in your own educational pursuits. Hopefully, my years of suffering through unimaginative nonsense like "My dog ate my homework," or "My grandmother died again," could be used to educate the next generation in what makes a really fine excuse.

Excuse Rule #1: Keep it simple.

There’s nothing worse than an overly complicated excuse. Many high school teachers and college professors get annoyed quickly, and nothing brings on annoyance like some long, drawn-out tale. The fact is that your instructors really don’t want to know the whole history of your life any more than you want to know the gritty details of theirs. Instead, keep your excuse simple and to the point. Your instructors will appreciate not having their time wasted. Poor excuse: "I’m sorry I was late for class, but I was on the way here, and this squirrel ran into the road in front of my bike. I swerved to avoid it, but then I ran into this dog, who was chasing the squirrel. If that wasn’t bad enough, the dog was dragging this little girl by the leash (the leash was on the dog, not the girl), and I almost hit her with my bike, too. So, my bike was covered with dog drool and the little girl was crying, and I had to walk them home, but then I started worrying about what happened to the squirrel, so I…."

OK, you get the idea. This annoying excuse goes on way too long. This student will likely lose extra attendance points just for rambling. Better excuse: "I’m sorry I was late, but I almost ran over a rabid squirrel." Perfect. This says it all in just a few words. Plus it gives the instructor a heads-up that the student might develop a serious health problem (rabies) at some point in the future. Having rabies is an excellent excuse for missing a final exam.

Excuse Rule #2: Make it believable.
Some students believe they’re Zena Warrior Princess or a Dungeons and Dragons tenth-level Ranger, but professional educators are usually more grounded in reality. Inventing excuses that make you sound much cooler than you actually are is a one-way ticket to failure. Make sure that your excuses cast you in a believable light, even if that light isn’t terribly flattering.
Poor written excuse: "Deer Perfeser, Im sorry I missed clas, butt I wuz compeetng in a big speling be."
Do I have to spell out what makes this excuse unbelievable? Better written excuse: "Deer Perfesr, I cood not be in yer clas cuz I had a job careying dikchunairees four the kids in the big spelng be." Excellent. This is believable, and it makes the student sound like she’s trying to be a useful member of society, despite obvious intellectual shortcomings.

Excuse Rule #3: It’s someone else’s fault.
This rule should not be overlooked by anyone serious about making excuses. Under no circumstances do you want to be blamed for your own failure. After all, if you contributed to your own downfall, then your teachers could legitimately impose some penalty on you for it. On the other hand, if you are a hapless victim of circumstances completely out of your control, then no compassionate person could expect you to suffer further.
Poor excuse: "I’m sorry I didn’t get my term paper turned in on time. I was going to work on it over the weekend, but NASA called me up and needed someone experienced to help talk one of their satellite astronauts back down to Earth. Seems he got a little freaked out up there, after circling Uranus, and kind of froze up."
Yes, this does blame the situation on someone else (NASA and a rookie astronaut), but it violates too many of the other rules. First off, this student has violated Rule #2 and created an unbelievable excuse. This guy is not a NASA-trained astronaut. Maybe the girls at the party Saturday night believed it, but your teacher will not. Actually, even the girls didn't believe it; they were just being polite. Any instructor would be insulted by this one, but a physics professor, in particular, may throw the student bodily out of the classroom. Plus, it’s a little too long (see Rule #1). It’s a common mistake to make things too complicated when trying to lay blame on others.
Better excuse: "Sorry I don’t have my term paper completed yet. The Health Department has sealed off my bedroom and I don’t have access to my books or computer." This will definitely work. It’s someone else’s fault (insensitive bureaucrats), while being totally believable and simple. This student will be given loads of extra time to finish the assignment because the instructor will want the paper to be fully decontaminated before being handed in.

Excuse Rule #4: Use flattery.
It sounds basic, but too many students ignore this very effective technique. If you can get your instructor’s attention off of you and your flagrant disregard for school policy, then you’d be a fool not to, right? So you just get the instructor’s mind off of you by offering something far more interesting to think about – namely, the instructor herself!
Poor excuse: "Sorry I missed the exam, but I was busy doing homework for one of my other classes. The other class is one I’m actually interested in, so I think it’s way more important than your class. I’m just taking your course because I have to in order to graduate. And I don’t get much out of coming to your class, anyway, because I usually fall asleep during your lectures."
It’s a shame this student needs to pass this class to graduate, because that will never happen. Her best chance for graduating now is transferring to another school.
Better excuse: "I can’t believe that I missed your exam! I was up half the night studying for the test because I love this class so much. I’m sure you understand. Anyway, because I went to bed so late, I overslept. After learning so much from you, I was planning on majoring in this subject, but if I have an ‘F’ on an exam in here, I don’t know if I’ll be able to."
Bingo! They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, so here’s a student who’s imitating and flattering her instructor at the same time. It was a nice touch when the student said, "I’m sure you understand." Throwing this in acknowledges the instructor’s superior intellect.
Excuse Rule #5: Excessive gore could work for or against you.
In my years of teaching, I’ve gotten some pretty gruesome excuses from students. I’ve seen emergency room paperwork smeared with blood (it could have actually been red paint; I didn’t have it analyzed), I’ve had students pulling up (or down) clothing to show off stitches and scars, and there have been graphic descriptions of burrowing, parasitic insects. Generally, I turn green at these excuses and agree to any make-up assignment the student suggests. However, there are high school biology teachers, plus university nursing and medical school professors, who live for these excuses.
They want to examine puncture wounds - sometimes with surgical tools - and they long to hear exactly what color the boil turned after it expanded to cantaloupe size. If you’re not prepared to provide these details, don’t go down the path of gore.
Poor excuse: "I’ll need to leave class a little early today. I have an appointment with a specialist who’s going to look at this thing that’s been growing on my back. My regular doctor didn’t know what to make of it, so he tried to lance it himself in the office. Well, he never thought there’d be that much pus! And the smell! They had to call in a federal Hazardous Materials team to clear the building. Anyway…"
I would have stopped listening when I heard the word "specialist." I never need to hear about anything that happens in a specialist’s office. That’s their own gross business. I would probably suggest the student leave class right that very second, just in case her pus starts flowing again.
However, this student might be speaking to a medical school professor whose specialty was devoted to excessive pus. If that’s the case, then the student had better have a disgusting growth available for public display or she’s not getting out of that classroom one second early.
Better excuse: "Sorry I have to leave class a little early. I’ve got a doctor’s appointment because
I have to get something taken care of ... um ... down there." Not bad. It’s not gender-specific, so either a male or female student could use it. Also, even a medical professional is unlikely to insist on many details in order to avoid embarrassing the student. The primary problem with this one is that it must be said in private. If other students hear someone making this excuse, unpleasant rumors may begin to circulate around campus. Best possible excuse: "I think I’m going to throw up!"
This is a classic. Any instructor can’t get the student out of the room fast enough. Even the most hard-core medical school professors don’t want anyone spewing on their gleaming mahogany desks.
Excuse Rule #6: Don’t forget the details.
Last, but not least, are the little details necessary for producing good excuses. For example, a note from a doctor would not be written a cocktail napkin. Believe it or not, an appointment card from an a real doctor’s office that simply says something like, "Appointment scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday," would carry more weight than a used pizza box that reads, "Jane is very ill with the pox and will not be in class all week. Sincerely, Jane’s Doctor." The really great thing about doctor’s appointment cards is that they don’t even need to have the patient’s name or medical condition on them to make them seem official. Students have taken their little sisters’ orthodontist appointment cards and used them to back-up claims of undiagnosed brain diseases.
Along the same lines, a mother would not write a note to her daughter’s teacher on the inside of a matchbook. And a death certificate would not be scrawled in crayon on a sheet from a spiral notebook with the frayed edges still hanging off of it.
Details should not be ignored when students are making their excuses in person, either. If a student claims to have been involved in a car accident, then a whiplash collar is a nice accessory to wear around campus for a week or two. If a student says she was bitten by a dog, then a poodle dangling by the teeth from a selected body part may be in order. If a student calls an instructor and claims to be in the emergency room, then sounds of a huge party in the background will give away the excuse as bogus. Oh, and don’t forget a little cough or sniffle when calling to report illness. It’s a good way to remind the instructor that you’re contagious, and everyone would be healthier if you just stay home.

Conclusion
There you have it. All the information you need to make successful excuses throughout your school years. And with just a little creativity, you can adapt this list to the needs of the newly-hired employee once you graduate. The same basic rules apply. For example, in both school and workplace situations you want to keep your excuses simple. In college you might say, "Sorry I missed class, Professor. I overslept because my roommate used my alarm clock to put out the fire." This is good –simple and to the point, and it’s someone else’s fault. Once you’re on the job, you could easily modify this to, "Sorry I was late for work, boss. My alarm clock is still being held as evidence at the police station." See how easy that is?
I hope you’ve found this list instructive. Now you’re ready to go out there and make some excuses of your own. Sorry I can’t stay to help. I just got a call that a supermodel broke her ankle and they need me to fill in for the swimsuit photo shoot in Maui. I’m sure you understand.
